Good afternoon dear polish sweethearts! Today I'm sharing some swatches of a 5-piece ombre set by The New Black. This brand's concept is really neat to me. They aim to take polish trends and make them accessible. It's great for people that don't have 600+ polish collections but want to be on trend and try out some new things. In addition to the ombre sets they sell (there are a ton, and in a bunch of different colors), they also have a typography manicure kit, funky french manicure duos, and glitter duos.
These swatches are from the Waves ombre set. This is the order that they were packaged in; they go from lightest to darkest and from most green to most blue.
The bottles in the set are rectangular minis. They are the exact same bottles that you can find in the Urban Decay polish sets. I have to say, with the large logo on there, they have a very bold graphic appeal!
The darkest teal color (thumb) is a creme finish, and required two coats. The pointer is the glitteriest color, again using two coats. The middle finger is a shimmer, which needed -- you guessed it -- two coats. The fourth finger is another shimmer color, and I needed three coats for that one. The pinky is a light minty creme, which only needed two coats.
The formula of these polishes is very nice. Very creamy and pigmented, with a range in finishes. This makes the set very nice for people that don't have a very wide collection and want to get some different polish types to try out.
I have to say though, I am more intrigued by some of their other ombre sets. The thing that I struggled with in this one is the lone glitter polish. I think it throws off the smooth gradient look to have one glitter nail in the midst of the more subtle finishes. I am usually on board with unusual nail looks, but for the ombre, I guess I am a bit pickier.
If you are looking for a truer, more consistent ombre look, I would suggest looking into their Floyd or Haze sets. Though I haven't tried them myself, from the look of them, the finishes all seem to be closer together.
Despite the fact that I might not wear this as an ombre look, the colors are beautiful and the formula is first class. If you are a fan of teals and greens, this is definitely a set worth checking out to bolster your collection.
You can find more information about The New Black on Facebook, Pinterest, and YouTube. Their products can be found at Sephora and Nordstrom. The 5 piece ombre sets retail for $22.
The products in this post were provided to me by the manufacturer or their PR.
All of them are beautiful shades! I esp like the glitter one!!
ReplyDeleteI really love these colours!
ReplyDeleteWhat I might do is reverse the order so that the glittery polish ends up on your ring finger, and could be seen as a standard accent nail. :)
Thank you for the review. I am definitely going to check them out.
I agree with you on te glittery nail, it's just slightly out of place, but still the colours are fab.
ReplyDeleteOh I love all of these colors! I wish I could justify spending $22 for 5 mini polishes in a set
ReplyDeleteIt seems as if all these sets have one polish that is glittery in the bunch.
ReplyDeleteThese look amazing!!!
ReplyDeleteCute, my favourite colour is the mint green on the pinky. :)
ReplyDeleteLOve this but I agree that the one glitter polish throws me off!
ReplyDeletethats such a great idea to have ombre sets! really nice colors too, but i agree the glitter is throwing me off
ReplyDeletecute idea and i really like the very square shaped nails!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love these sets. I like that they'd look wonderful on their own, as well as in an ombre mani. :') Definitely need to get my hands on one of these sets.
ReplyDeleteI passed over this one because I got the eight piece Runway Set, but now I wanna go back and get it!
ReplyDeletemy favourite is the mint green. it looks tasty
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a really nice set, I really like the glitter one, it gives it a little something x :-)
ReplyDeleteI am loving this entire set - possibly not together, but they all seem like great colors!
ReplyDeletegorgeous! i like this ombre, i understand how you maybe wouldn't, the difference in the finishes would probably tweak my OCD tendencies haha. i am intrigued by this brand but can't find a must-have color to make myself buy a set just yet.
ReplyDeletebeautiful!!! love their ombre collection.. they are really the new black
ReplyDeleteI was just looking at these on Sephora's website yesterday! The polishes are pretty but you're right about the glittery one throwing off the ombre effect a bit. The other sets are super pretty too though and these colors by themselves are great. ^_^
ReplyDeleteI love these! Damnit I wish the Danish Sephora wasn't so expensive! I'd be getting these in a heartbeat
ReplyDeleteOH. MY. GOD!
ReplyDeleteThese are so my colors(except the bluest one), I defenitly have to buy this set O.O!!
Thanks a lot for sharing :D.
Greetings, Jenny
I took inspiration from this and did my own version with polishes I already had =) going to post it to my blog later xo
ReplyDeleteThis set is teasing me, I'm addicted to these shades of blue/green!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I do agree with you about the glitter one. Glitters strike too much among those subtle colours. It could be even view as an accent, though..but I would have preferred the same shade without glitter :)
These colors are so gorgeous and I can't wait to get my hands on a few!
ReplyDeleteToo bad the finishes are so far apart, the colors are really pretty together!
ReplyDeleteI agree about the glitter. Just kinda has an off look. I do enjoy all the colors separately though.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of this! I'm more into the same finishes for an ombre look though
ReplyDeletemaybe the giltter was meant for the ring finger?
ReplyDeleteI really like the colors in this set!
ReplyDeleteI. Agree. These colors are vibrant and pretty but I can't see Me wearing 10 fingers of the same shade. The ombre is perfect though.
