Tattered Monochromatic Spray Marble
I never look forward to the water marble day of the 31 Day Challenge. This year, instead of putting myself through all of the pain, I went straight to a technique that I do have fun with: the spray marble! This technique is a sister to the water marble, and I actually prefer the edgy, tattered outcome.
Nail polishes used:
Polish My Life Birthday Suit
Polish My Life Storm Clouds
Jessica Cosmetics NY State of Mind
China Glaze Ghoulish Glow
Formula X Dark Matter
I started out by using a triangle makeup sponge to do a gradient of cream, grey, and dark grey. Then, I painted on a coat of glow in the dark topcoat, because why not?
The spray marble began with filling a plastic cup with room temperature filtered water and taping off the area surrounding my fingers to minimize mess. I gently dropped one drop of black polish on the surface of the water, and then used a spray bottle to mist a 50/50 mixture of water and apple cider vinegar on the polish. I've seen other people use hairspray, perfume, all sorts of other mixtures to break up the polish on the water, but @madamluck was the first one I saw that used the vinegar mix. It worked great!
I dipped one finger in at a time, removed excess polish from the surface of the water, and pulled my finger out. Remove the tape, clean up, and topcoat; you're done!
The glow was stronger where it was layered over light polish. Looks kinda like alien eggs, doesn't it?

The effect is so cool and I love that it glows in the dark too.
ReplyDeleteWhy have I never heard of using vinegar? I've got to try it next time because yours turned out beautifully!
ReplyDeleteI love this look! I have yet to succeed at ANY type of water marble, spray marble included so I just might have to try the 50/50 vinegar mix you used ;) Does it have to be apple cider vinegar or will plain white vinegar work too?
ReplyDeleteNot sure! I've only tried it this way.
ReplyDeleteI am so in love with this! Can't believe I haven't tried a spray marble :/
ReplyDeleteit looks AMAZING when it glows in the dark!
ReplyDeleteI love it! both in light and in the dark :) I have yet not succeeded with spray marble, need to find a bottle that sprays just right I guess. But i love the effect, and the gradient under makes it awesome :) good job!
ReplyDeleteI love the look of these, especially the glow in the dark effect!
ReplyDeleteThat's really cool. I didn't know that technique existed!!
ReplyDeleteI love the spray technique, but the perfume was way to strong to do again. I need to try this!!
ReplyDeleteDo you spray the mixture on your nail or the polish in the water?
ReplyDeleteOn the polish in the water!
ReplyDeleteWOoooW
ReplyDeleteI love it!!

This totally looks like oil and water lol. I love how this looks!
ReplyDeleteAwesome, love this. I've never had luck with this water marbling technique - I'll try the apple cider vinegar for sure, thanks for the tip!
ReplyDeleteit came out stunning!!! Love it and I must try the vinegar mix as I had no luck with hairspray and sanitiser
ReplyDeleteDoes the vinegar cause problems with the water in the cup? Windex works great, but then you have to clean out the water every time.
ReplyDeleteI didn't have any trouble with it, though not every spray looked the way I wanted it to.
ReplyDeleteGreat look Sarah and how would have thought to use vinegar!! Fantastic :)
ReplyDeleteThis spotted marble is done to perfection! The gradient brings so much more depth to the look. I always use hairspray but next time I'm definitely trying the vinegar mix. Thanks for the tip.
ReplyDeleteYour nails look so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI love how all these different colors match together. :)
