Abstracted Lava Lamp

Hey guys! I'm not totally sure where today's nail art came from. Well, that's not completely true; the color scheme was lifted directly from a quilt that my mom is working on for me as a Christmas present (she gave me an IOU at the time because of how busy the season is). But the shapes? Those came from precisely nowhere!

I began with a base of OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls. Then I grabbed my medium length striper and freehanded on some random shapes, beginning with GOSH Deep Sea Blue, the dark navy shade. Then, using my next color (OCC Grandma, the coral) I painted on some additional shapes, making sure that they fit in well with the shapes that I had already done. I guess it's kind of like a lazy puzzle! I repeated this process with Essence Bonnie and Nicole by OPI My Lifesaver until my nails were filled with shapes!

I wasn't sure what to call this manicure, but after looking at the shapes for a bit I realized they kind of looked like the blobs in a lava lamp. I guess I sort of just ran with that idea for the title! Anyone else got any brilliant ideas?

I like the way the shapes came out in this manicure but what I really love is the color scheme. The blues and teals all sort of fit in together, but then they're broken up by the addition of the bright coral. I can't wait to show you guys my quilt in this palette when it's done -- I hope to make a nail design that mimics it!

Hope you've enjoyed this bit of nail art, thanks for reading! (Love you Mom!)

  16. My first thought was that the illusion of movement reminded me of a koi pond; I see another commenter though so as well. OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls seems to be a popular base; I just bought it yesterday for half off. Quilting moms are the best, aren't they? I'm curled up in one of Mom's quilts right now.
